In July of 2016 a team of 6 went on the first mission trip from Hillside Community Church to work with a church in Jacmel, St. Lucia for 10 days. They worked with the men and women of Fellowship Baptist Church to make improvements to one of their parishioners homes. The team added 2 large windows in the bedrooms for ventilation and added doors to each of the bedrooms, bathrooms and front of the house. They extended the wall in the living space and enlarged the living area so that the whole family can be in the room together at the same time.
The VBS for the local communities was a huge success and reached over 100 children. The theme was "The Lost Pirates". The team dressed in pirate costumes and had a story and craft for each day that taught the children that their treasure is in God's Word. 22 children gave their life to Christ that week. Praise God!
August 2017 Hillside sent a second mission trip to St. Lucia with a team of 9 for 10 days. The team worked with the men and women of Fellowship Baptist Church to turn the basement of the church into a place the children could have Sunday School lessons, watch movies and have fun. They helped remodel the restrooms with new counters, sinks, and fixtures. The whole church came out to paint the entire church inside and out on their National Holiday.
The team conducted VBS for over 150 children from all the neighboring communities. The theme was "Geared up for God". Each day had a Bible story, craft, and music. 29 children gave their life to Christ during VBS.
On the last day after church, there was fellowship and a cookout on the beach. This was everyone's favorite time because we just had fun with our new friends from St. Lucia. It was quite a site to see the St. Lucian men learn to throw an American football.
The 2018 Mission Trip with Hillside Community church was a huge success. The men helped to build a new sound stage complete with a new sound board so that the audio from services could be controlled from the back of the church. Vacation Bible School had 167 children attend from all the surrounding communities. The theme was "Hero Central" Discovering your strength in God. The children learned about the character traits for being God's superhero by having peace, wisdom, courage, heart and power.
They also had a youth outreach event on Thursday night that had over 70 youth from all the communities attend for a fun night of grilling hot dogs, games and hearing the Word of God. The Hillside team did a powerful skit that night depicting that no matter what they are going through in life that all they need is Christ and He will help them through their struggles.
In January of 2017 we started an online inductive bible study through a closed facebook group with the women's group. This allows us to all study God's Word together on a daily basis even when we are not in St. Lucia and teach how to interpret scripture with scripture. If you would like more information about this group you can email us at email@example.com.
In January 2017 and 2018 we had the opportunity to visit the schools in St. Lucia and assist with teaching about Jesus as a class period during the school day. This is a ministry that Patricia, Myrtle and Terry have started and have a heart for reaching the children. It was an honor to be a part of their ministry and a breath of fresh air to know that the Principals are so open to having a class all about God.
